Do safety cameras cut casualties?

At all camera enforcement sites, we regularly review the number of injury collisions and casualties that occur. We also review speed data collected from these sites.

In December 2005, the Department for Transport published an independent analysis of casualty, collision and speed data (collected from 38 safety camera partnerships) in order to evaluate the effective of safety cameras.

This research revealed the following findings for Bedfordshire and Luton

Fatal and serious casualties at camera sites decreased by 72.2%
Personal injury collisions at camera sites decreased by 48.6%

Average speeds at fixed camera sites reduced by 9.8% or 4.5mph
Average speeds at mobile camera sites reduced by 3.6% or 1.3mph

The number of vehicles exceeding the speed limit reduced by 23% at new camera sites
The number of vehicles exceeding the speed limit by more than 15 mph reduced by 39% at new camera sites
