How are speed limits set?
National speed limits are set by the Government – these are 70, 60 and 30 for cars on motorways & dual carriageways, single carriageways and urban areas respectively. (Different speed limits apply for different types of vehicle on different types of road).
Local highway authorities may apply local speed limits, according to the characteristics of the road – so for example, if there are bends and lots of junctions and accesses on the main road, the local authority may apply a lower speed limit than the standard national limit. Similarly, on some urban roads it may be appropriate to apply a 40 mph limit.
All variations to the national speed limit must be clearly signed. Where there is a regular system of street lighting, a 30 mph limit applies unless signs show otherwise.
Local speed limits are in the process of being reviewed. Click here for further information about the speed limit review.
