Speed

Speeding presents a road safety hazard and affects people's quality of life.

Effective speed management is an important element of the Partnership's casualty reduction strategy, which includes:

- reviewing speed limits to ensure they are appropriate for the roads
- introducing engineering measures, including traffic-calming solutions, to reduce traffic speeds in hazardous locations
- ensuring speed limits are appropriately signed so that drivers are aware of the limit that applies
- increasing road users knowledge and understanding of speed limits
- encouraging greater compliance with speed limits by raising awareness of the hazards of speeding
- enforcing speed limits using a range of enforcment methods, covert and overt
- operating safety cameras (fixed and mobile speed cameras) at casualty trouble-spots
- operating Vehicle-Activated Signs (VAS) at selected locations as a high visibility speed limit reminder for speeding drivers to correct their speed
- prosecuting people detected speeding
