Bedfordshire Police
Bedfordshire Police is responsible for law enforcement in Bedfordshire and Luton. We also manage road traffic collision scenes, investigate collisions and liaise with the local highway authorities on a range of traffic-related matters. Law Enforcement
Our Roads Policing Unit, Road Safety Enforcement Tasking Team, Safer Neighbourhood Teams and Safety Camera Enforcement Team enforce road safety laws which are designed for the safety of all road users. We use both covert and overt enforcement methods.
We focus on the following offences:
- excess and inappropriate speed
- driving whilst impaired by drugs or alcohol
- using hand-held mobile phones whilst driving
- failing to wear seat belts or use the correct child restraints
- unroadworthy and unregistered vehicles and those without tax, MOT or
insurance
- driving without due care
Collision Management, Reporting and Investigation

We also respond to road traffic collisions - recording, investigating and managing collision scenes daily. Our Collision Investigation Unit investigates all fatal and life-changing road traffic collisions. All fatal and life changing collision scenes are treated as crime scenes and all traffic officers are trained in scene management to preserve the scene for the Collision Investigation Unit. The purpose is to establish how and why the collision occurred i.e. to establish the cause and contributory factors. This information will be used for two main purposes: as part of the criminal justice process, and to provide intelligence that will help inform future road safety initiatives.
Our Family Liaison Officers will deliver the trauma message to victims' next-of-kin and support the families of people who have been involved in fatal or life-changing collisions.
Traffic Management
The Traffic Management Unit liaise with the local highway authorities on a whole range of traffic-related issues, including probelms that present a road safety hazard or affect people's quality of life. We also deal with traffic complaints received from local communities such as problems with speeding traffic or parking problems and are able to deploy police resources to investigate and address these problems and liaise with the local authorities on these matters. We respond on behalf of Bedfordshire Police to consultations from local authorities on highway matters outlining the police view on proposals, their impact and enforcement.
