Seatbelts - Drivesafely

Seatbelts

The wearing of seatbelts for drivers and passengers in the front of a car became law in 1983.  In 1989 it became compulsory for children under the age of 14 to wear a seatbelt in the rear.  In 1991 it became compulsory for adults to wear a seatbelt in the back of a car.  However, there are still many people who do not wear a seatbelt.  In the last survey in 2010 only 90% of drivers and passengers were wearing seatbelts in Bedfordshire.  In the last 5 years 11 people have been killed in road traffic collisions who were not wearing a seatbelt.

Following on from the November seat belt campaign Luton Sixth Form College media students have assisted in designing their own films and posters for our March campaign.  The winning poster will be displayed on an Advan which is touring Luton and Central Bedfordshire during the week commencing 10 March.

They films can be seen at  http://youtu.be/5R568GRi3aE

This is part of the Belt up for Life campaign which the partnership has been running for a number of years.

What is the penalty for not wearing a seatbelt?

The penalty for not wearing a seatbelt is a fixed penalty charge of £100 or if prosecuted a fine up to £500.  Alternatively you may be offered an educational course.

What does the seatbelt educational course involve?

Anyone caught not wearing a seatbelt by the police may be offered an awareness course as an alternative to prosecution. The ‘Your Belt/Your Life’ course aims to influence and change the offender’s behaviour. The course is internet based and topics covered include:

  • Introduction: starting with the basics, what could happen to you in a crash if you are not wearing a seatbelt?
  • Seatbelt legislation: what the law says
  • I don’t need to … I don’t want to … how to overcome some typical arguments against wearing seatbelts
  • Why wouldn’t you: discover why it’s never a good idea to choose not to wear your seatbelt
  • Getting into the habit: how to make putting on a seatbelt part of your normal routine.

Delegates will be required to take an assessment at the end of the course, with a minimum pass mark of 7/10. There is no limit on the number of attempts a delegate can have at the assessment, so long as the pass mark has been achieved by the completion deadline. They will also be able to prepare their own an Action plan.

The cost of the course is £36 including VAT.
